KOF draws both on the gritty urban reality of Liverpool and the values of his Ghanaian roots to develop the sharp take on life articulated in his music. 'Be Like You' is the second single from the forthcoming project by KOF and finds him standing up for the purity of music and its purpose. Now in an interview with CNN he has received prestigious endorsement from Kanya King as one of her five favourite artists.



Kanya King is the founder of the Music of Black Origin (MOBO) awards which aims to elevate black music and culture to mainstream popular status both in the UK and internationally. King chooses her five favourite artists of the moment for CNN.

"Now KOF is an artist who shows it's not just the artists from London who have a big future ahead of them. We rate the young man from Liverpool so highly that we made sure MOBO TV shot an acoustic session with him and one of the songs we were lucky enough to hear live was "Be Like You."

The singer/songwriter's second single is getting huge support from the UK radio stations like 1Xtra and Choice FM, and rightly so. He is re-injecting true soul music back in the public eye and I can only support this as soul music is the first genre of music I fell in love with. It was one of the reasons why I started up the MOBO Awards in 1996.

Apart from, of course, Adele, there are not enough musicians out there who can really touch your inner self like the greats, such as Aretha Franklin, could many years ago. Obviously, these artists are plying their trade in the UK, but KOF, however, is getting the recognition he deserves quicker than most.

As for the acoustic session KOF gave, it is definitely a special and intimate performance that you can see when you have a few minutes."

Dead Funny

Police have arrested two women after they tried to take the body of a dead relative onto a plane at Liverpool John Lennon Airport. Staff at the airport became suspicious when the women tried to check the man in for a flight to Berlin on Saturday. The 91-year-old man from Germany is thought to have died the previous day, and had been put into a wheelchair.

The women pushed the 91-year-old man in a wheelchair and covered his face with sunglasses in a bid to board him on their flight to Berlin, sources said. The pair, a 41-year-old and a 66-year-old, are said to have protested that the lifeless pensioner was merely asleep when probed by officials at Liverpool John Lennon Airport on Saturday.

Staff became suspicious when they tried to check in 91-year-old Curt Willi Jarant, who was wearing sunglasses, for a flight to Berlin on Saturday. The women - his widow and step-daughter - said they thought he was asleep. They were arrested on suspicion of failing to give notification of a death, police said. The pair, who are German nationals but live in Oldham, Greater Manchester, have been released on bail until 1 June. It is understood they took Mr Jarant to the airport in a taxi from Oldham, a spokesman said.

HUB hunt for talent

An invitation is now open to the best musicians from indie to funk, rock to soul, hip-hop to metal to send in a demo which could see them starring on HUB's live music stage (May 23 & 24, Wellington Dock).

Successful bands will earn themselves a slot at the festival, joining confirmed headliner, Liverpool hip-hop legend Young Kof.

Susan Whitehead, Event organiser, said: “HUB has really matured now and attracts the best urban performers from around the world - and we want the best of Liverpool to perform with them. The music search is open to anyone with heaps of energy, style and passion. Only the best talent will be selected to play at what promises to be a wicked weekend.”

Bands have until March 10 to apply with a biography, a completed artists’ contact form and a demo. A panel of music industry professionals will judge all applications and choose their favourites to play at the event. Full line up will be confirmed by Monday, April 6.

Caught in Between Showcase - Young People lead fight to combat Anti-Social Behaviour and Gun and Knife Crime‏

On Friday 28th November a group of young people from across Liverpool are aiming to combat the growth in youth anti-social behaviour and gun and knife crime with a multi-arts showcase about these hot topics. The night is a culmination of their learning from a course entitled 'Caught in Between' that looked at the phenomenon of youth gun and knife crime and anti-social behaviour.

"This group are choosing not to adopt the names they are labeled with. This group have chosen to follow their dreams and this will reduce the chance that they will be caught in between. They have chosen to lead in a new direction that will celebrate their unique gifts and inspire others to do the same"
