LONDON, Aug 5 (Bernama) -- Malaysia's hope of grabbing the first medal from the 2012 Olympics was dashed after Koo Kien Keat/Tan Boon Heong bowed out to the top seeds, Chung Jae Sung/Lee Yong Dae of South Korea in the bronze medal decider.
In the event held at the Wembley Arena, here today, the Malaysians lost 21-23, 10-21 in 47 minutes.
In the Group D match earlier, Koo/Tan were beaten by the South Koreans 16-21, 11-21.
In the first set, the Malaysians who are world number eight, opened account and were leading 3-1, 8-5, 14-10 and 19-13 before the South Korean duo crawled back to level the score at 20-20.
Jae Sung/Yong Dae, with the combination of jumping smashes and drop shots then let the Malaysians collect another point before sealing the game at 23-21.
In the second set, the South Korean pair raised their game, leading all the way, 9-3, 14-5, 17-9 and sealed the match point for 21-10.
Koo said it was really disappointing as they were leading the first game with 19-13.
"We were confident of winning the first set. It was very crucial because if we had won it, it would pressure our opponents. But they were more composed, crawled back and we lost the set.
"In the second set, they were more confident. We gave our best but it was a total disaster," Koo told reporters after the match.
Tan admitted that after comfortably leading the first set 19-13, they wanted to finish it early.
"That's where we made unforced errors. In the second set, the South Koreans raised their game and were fully prepared for whatever we threw at them," he said.
On their future, Koo and Tan said they would want to play in the next Olympics edition in Brazil in 2016.
Since 1956, only shuttlers in the men's doubles, Cheah Soon Kit/Yap Kim Hock (Atlanta, 1996) and men's singles, Datuk Lee Chong Wei (Beijing 2008), had come close to clinching the gold but ended up with silver medals.
The Sidek brothers, Razif and Jalani, contributed Malaysia's first Olympic medal with a bronze at the 1992 Barcelona Games while their younger brother Rashid took home a bronze from the men's singles at the same Games.
