San Antonio Veteran Chosen to Accompany First Lady Michelle Obama During Opening Ceremony of 2012 Olympics
Department of Veterans Affairs: San Antonio Veteran Chosen to Accompany First Lady Michelle Obama During Opening Ceremony of 2012 Olympics
A local paralympian and San Antonio Veteran was chosen to join First Lady Michelle Obama during the Opening Ceremony for the 2012 Olympic Games in London. The Veteran encourages his fellow Veterans in the San Antonio area to enroll for health care at South Texas Veterans Health Care System.San Antonio, Texas (PRWEB) July 18, 2012
Local paralympian and San Antonio native, Gabriel Diaz De Leon is packing his bags now for the trip of a lifetime. He is thrilled at the opportunity to travel to London next week along with five other individuals including The Honorable Louis B. Susman, United States Ambassador to the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, and Brandi Chastain, 2-time Olympic gold medalist for Soccer.
The group will attend the Opening Ceremony with First Lady, Michelle Obama, meet with U.S. athletes, and encourage American children to be active in their daily lives.
Mr. Diaz De Leon, a graduate of John Jay High School in San Antonio, is an enrolled Veteran at South Texas Veterans Health Care System. He first got involved in the Department of Veterans Affairs’ national games and special events after his injury in 1984.
In 1988 he traveled to South Korea where he competed against other paralympians in track and field events. Since then, he’s competed in Greece and Australia. This year, he coached paralympians from the San Antonio area in events like discus, shot put and javelin.
“(Participating in the games) has made me more aware of what I’m capable of doing and what I can achieve by staying active and being out in society,” Diaz De Leon states. He says he “wouldn’t have gotten started with (paralympic) sports if it wasn’t for the Recreation Therapists like Jose Laguna.” He particularly appreciates the care provided by Dr. Trbovich in the Spinal Cord Injury Unit.
When asked what advice he has for Veterans in the San Antonio area, Diaz De Leon said, “Some of the best health care in the world is right here at the VA hospital. There are a lot of caring individuals working for the VA and they’re out there for us.”

Britain Welcomes Olympic Torch Relay
Britain Welcomes the London 2012 Olympic Torch Relay
Thousands of cheering Britons lined the streets of towns and cities across Cornwall and Devon as the Olympic torch was carried over 136 miles from Land’s End to Plymouth Hoe on the first day of its 8,000-mile relay around the UK.(PRWEB) May 21, 2012
Thousands of cheering Britons lined the streets of towns and cities across Cornwall and Devon as the Olympic torch was carried over 136 miles from Land’s End to Plymouth Hoe on the first day of its 8,000-mile relay around the UK. On 27 July the torch will ignite the cauldron at London’s Olympic Stadium to mark the start of the 2012 Games. More than 130 ordinary people and sports celebrities including Olympicswimming star Duncan Goodhew carried the torch through Falmouth, Truro and the Eden Project at the start of its 70-day journey around the UK.
The Olympic flame arrived at Culdrose in Cornwall from Athens on a golden aircraft called "The Firefly" on Friday in four custom-made lanterns. It was carried off the plane by Princess Anne, IOC Member and the president of the British Olympic Association, and then used to light a cauldron to mark the start of the Olympic Torch Relay by football hero David Beckham. “Eight thousand inspirational torchbearers are all set to bring the magic of the Games to everyone's doorstep,” said Nick Clegg, the deputy prime minister, who was at Culdrose to welcome the London 2012 delegation. “With every step, the excitement will build. Ten weeks from now, the world will watch as the flame arrives at the Olympic Stadium, bringing with it the hopes of a nation."
A gold-liveried air rescue Sea King helicopter flew the torch to Land’s End early on Saturday, where at 7.08am it was passed to the triple Olympic gold medallist sailorBen Ainslie, the first of 8,000 torch-bearers, in front of 3,500 people. "It's amazing,” he said. “For me, growing up in this part of the world, in Cornwall, for the Olympic Torch to set off from here around the nation, is a fantastic moment for the UK, for London 2012. Very exciting." Ainslie carried the torch 300m before ‘kissing’ it on to Anastasi Swallow, a junior surf champion who has represented her country four times. “This is really when the Games begin,” said Paul Deighton, the London 2012 Organising Committee’s chief executive. “Through these 70 days we’ll see some magic in our communities.”
An estimated nine million people are expected to come out and watch the torchbearers, as they run through over one thousand communities, passing landmarks such as Stonehenge, and coming within 10 miles of 95 per cent of the UK population.
“This is an extraordinary moment that has been 10 years in the making,” said Games organiser Sebastian Coe.

London Olympics 2012 Offers First Look at the Paralympic Torch
London 2012 Offers First Look at the Paralympic Torch
The London 2012 Organising Committee (LOCOG) has unveiled the Paralympic Torch to mark six months to go until the start of the Paralympic Games.
(PRWEB) February 29, 2012
The London 2012 Organising Committee (LOCOG) has unveiled the Paralympic Torch to mark six months to go until the start of the Paralympic Games.
- Paralympic Torch given mirrored finish to reflect the light of the Flame and teams of Torchbearers that carry it
- 33 communities across the UK to host Flame Celebrations over the August bank holiday weekend
- Over 3500 people across the UK have been nominated to carry the Paralympic Flame
- An image of the Paralympic Torch can be downloadedhere
Made from an aluminium alloy which was developed for the aerospace and automotive industry, the Paralympic Torch has been given a mirrored finish which means that its colour will adapt to its surroundings.
It will not only reflect the light from the Flame but also shine brightly on the teams of Torchbearers that carry it and the communities that it travels through on the way from Stoke Mandeville to the Olympic Stadium. With part of the 24 hour relay taking place overnight, the reflective nature of the Torch will help it shine brightly and stand out in the darkness.
Sharing the core design attributes of the Olympic Torch, the three sided form was inspired by the multiples of ‘three’ identified across London 2012. One of these is the Agitos, the symbol of the International Paralympic Committee. The three Agitos encircle a central point to emphasise the role the International Paralympic Committee plays in bringing athletes from all parts of the world together to compete. In the same way, the three sides of the Paralympic Torch encircle the Paralympic Flame.
Seb Coe, Chair of LOCOG, said: 'With six months to go until the start of the London 2012 Paralympic Games, we are on track to deliver a great Games that will showcase some of the most inspirational athletes from around the World. The Paralympic Torch Relay will provide the perfect start by involving people from across the UK in events celebrating the Flame and help the ignite passion for the Paralympics.'
Multi-medal winning Paralympian, Baroness Tanni Grey Thompson, said: 'The unveiling of the Paralympic Torch is an important part of the London 2012 Paralympic Torch Relay, as it will become the symbol that everyone recognises. With six months to go until the start of the Paralympic Games, I hope this will help build on the growing excitement and inspire the teams that are in line to carry the Flame from Stoke Mandeville to London.'
Designed by London-based designers Edward Barber and Jay Osgerby for use in both London 2012 Relays, the design of the Torch was driven by a desire to reflect modernity and innovation. Being made from an aluminium alloy, it is light whilst having good strength and excellent heat resistance. Thousands of round perforations, made using cutting-edge laser technology, help ensure that heat from the flame is quickly dissipated without being conducted down the handle. The holes also make the Torch lighter and give it a strong texture that is easy to grip.
Created by working in partnership with Basildon-based product engineers Tecosim and Coventry-based manufacturers, The Premier Group, the Torch reflects the UK’s talent in design and manufacturing.
Barber and Osgerby said: 'We wanted to make the most of pioneering production technologies and to demonstrate the industrial excellence available in the UK. We are incredibly proud to be representing the UK, in design. We’ve worked hard to create a Torch that universally celebrates both the Paralympic and Olympic Relays and which reflects the passion for London 2012.'
Four Flames will be lit as part of a new concept for the Paralympic Torch Relay, one each in London, Greater Belfast, Edinburgh and Cardiff. The Flames will be lit using the energy of physical human endeavour. Each nation will also host events celebrating the Flame Lightings. The four Flames will be united at the Paralympic Flame Lighting Ceremony at Stoke Mandeville, the spiritual home of the Paralympic Movement to create the London 2012 Paralympic Flame. This Flame will be carried on a 24 hour overnight Relay to London and the Opening Ceremony of the Paralympic Games.
Over 150 school teams from across the UK are taking part in STEM Challenge 9: The Paralympic Torch Relay Challenge, an Inspire mark project, where groups of 11 to 14-year-olds students are investigating how to create a spark by the energy of human endeavour to light the Paralympic Flame. STEMNET is shortlisting finalists, with the final taking place on Saturday 17th March at The Big Bang UK Science and Engineering Fair 2012. The winning team will receive prize money to support their school STEM Club and access to a Paralympic Torch Relay event.
33 communities from across the UK have taken the opportunity to host Flame Celebration’s over the August Bank Holiday weekend. Each celebration will be unique and have a flavour of the local area but will have the Paralympic values at its core.
In addition to the Flame Festivals and Flame Celebrations, the whole of the UK will be encouraged to help light the way to the Paralympic Games by lighting a lantern. To get involved, please visit http://www.london2012.com/get-involved/local-leaders/lantern-festival/
Sir Philip Craven, International Paralympic Committee President, said: 'I am delighted with the plans for the Paralympic Torch Relay as LOCOG and the IPC have worked closely to develop a concept that will not only capture the attention of the whole country but also act as a blueprint for Organizing Committees of future Games.
'I think it is brilliant that the actual Paralympic Flame, that will be used to light the Cauldron in the Opening Ceremony on 29 August, will be created at Stoke Mandeville, a place steeped in Paralympic history. The Games are coming home in six months time and it is only right that we celebrate the significance of Stoke Mandeville, the Paralympic Movement’s birthplace.'
The three Presenting Partners for the London 2012 Paralympic Torch Relay, BT, Lloyds TSB, and Sainsbury’s have each carried out a public nomination process to find some of the most inspirational teams across the UK to carry the Paralympic Flame. There were over 3500 nominations and they are now going through judging before the successful teams are announced in the next couple of months. The Relay will also include nominations from the International Paralympic Committee, the British Paralympic Association and other London 2012 sponsors.
Suzi Williams, Director, BT Group Marketing and Brand, added: 'Here at BT we’ve been involved in the Paralympics for decades and we understand the power of Paralympic sport to inspire all of us. The unveiling of the Paralympic Torch design today – with just six months to go - will help to inspire the teams of amazing people we’re bringing together to run with the Flame.'
Sally Hancock, Director, 2012 Partnership and Group Sponsorship at Lloyds Banking Group said: 'As the only Presenting Partner of both the Paralympic and Olympic Torch Relays, Lloyds TSB is proud to be bringing the spirit of the Games closer to communities.
'We had a fantastic response from the public last year, nominating people who have supported and inspired people in their community to carry the Paralympic Flame. With six months to go until the start of the Relay it’s great to see the excitement building as the Paralympic Torch is unveiled and communities prepare to celebrate at Flame Festivals around the UK.'
Gwyn Burr, Customer Service & Colleague Director at Sainsbury’s, said: 'We have been overwhelmed by the stories of determination, inspiration and courage which have been shared with us as part of our UK-wide nominations process. We look forward to sharing these stories with our customers and colleagues once the successful teams have been announced and to seeing the efforts of these incredible people rewarded with a genuine once-in-a-lifetime experience.'

More information about the London 2012 Torch design:
- The Torch is made up of an inner and an outer skin. These skins are held in place by a cast top piece and base.
- Although appearing completely seamless the Torch body is actually made from six components.
- The 8,000 circles offer a transparency that allows people to see right to the heart of the Torch and view the burner system which will keep the Flame alive.
- It is 800mm tall which will allow for it to be seen above crowds even when carried by the youngest Torchbearer.
- The final Torch will house a burner system that will feed the Flame.
- The construction helps to ensure that the weight of the Torch is once again kept to a minimum whilst conveying great simplicity.
The London 2012 multiples of three:
- Three Olympic Values – respect, excellence and friendship
- The UK has hosted the Olympic Games three times

Choose Trusted Providers for Olympics Accommodation
The Olympics are fast approaching and most travellers could be facing exorbitant accommodation costs and potential scams if not prepared. Consumers may also pay many times the going rate if they haven’t done their research.
London, UK (PRWEB UK) 7 February 2012
For warned is Forearmed to Avoiding Gangbuster Tactics
The Olympics are fast approaching and most travellers could be facing exorbitant accommodation costs and potential scams if not prepared. Consumers may also pay many times the going rate if they haven’t done their research.
The main Olympic Games are a short two weeks, however London can expect a huge influx of tourists, supporters, team affiliates, corporate spectators and auxiliary businesses well before and after the fortnight.
It’s reported that SOCOG the official Olympic body many months ago procured 40% of London’s hotel accommodation for their own needs. That leaves an estimated 72,000 hotel rooms for an estimated 320,000 visitors during that period.
No doubt all hoteliers are looking forward to the event with glee. It is the most talked about event within hospitality circles, however, there is surprisingly little consolidated thought or information on pricing.
Opportunist hoteliers may seek to raise prices by many multiples. Similarly tour operators have bulk purchased much of the accommodation and are now charging double or even triple the face value when combined in a package deal. Consumer groups and media will hotly rebut and frown upon un-ethical price rises, but there is limited regulation.
Visit Britain in association with London 2012 have created a ‘Fair Pricing & Practice charter’ and are hoping to get numerous signatories. However, even from this authority there is little guidance as to what constitutes a fair and reasonable pricing policy. So what is a fair price for such an event and what period will attract the peak crowds? Ultimately the market will determine a fair price.
Reasonable Prices for Guest Loyalty
Derek Gallimore the director of Boutique London Lets – a serviced accommodation specialist in London – says “tourists and business travellers alike should plan their trip and book in advance. Ensure that their booking is with a reputable company and ensure they are not paying too much”. Boutique London Lets pledges to keep its accommodation prices reasonable with a view to building brand awareness and guest loyalty as the ultimate payoff.
Paradoxically, the public should be weary of cheap accommodation during such periods. Many make-shift and temporary accommodations will no doubt present themselves as every London land-owner tries to share a little bit of the Olympic 2012 windfall.
Accommodation scams are surfacing people are sold accommodation only to arrive and find it was not legitimate and be left without. Derek Gallimore suggests “people select their accommodation carefully, and ensure the companies have good community reviews and have existed in the market for a reasonable period of time.”
London will be a fantastic place to be during the Games, but don’t be left out in the cold. Organise early, and be smart.

Exclusive London Olympics 2012

The London Olympics in 2012 are going to bring a new buzz to this bustling, historic city. Millions will be glued to their TVs watching all of the sporting action and thousands will flock to the city itself to watch events live and at specialized viewing parties across London and the rest of the country.
While iconic and historic buildings around London are proving popular luxury hospitality venues for many, something a little different – and unique – is luxury yacht hire on the Thames. London will see superyachts traveling up the Thames – many for the first and only time - and mooring in and around various docks and Canary Wharf.
One company offering the opportunity to view televised events on board a luxury superyacht during the games is My Yacht London, who will be mooringa 45-meter superyachtin Canary Wharf for the duration of the London Olympics.
While Londoners and tourists alike might be used to seeing HMS Belfast and similar naval vessels moored on the Thames, a $40m superyacht for hire is something a little different!
My Yacht London will be a floating luxury hospitality venue for daytime and evening televised viewings, lunches, dinners, parties and gala receptions for invited guests, clients, partners and media, with bespoke luxury hospitality, open bars, lounges, private VIP areas and public recreation and exhibition spaces.
As with many parts of London, some areas are being renovated and improved ahead of the games. One such area, where the yacht is to be moored, is Wood Wharf, a new development being created within Canary Wharf that will include berths for yachts and for superyachts, public landscaped areas and giant TV screens for public viewings of televised Olympic and special events surrounding the games.
All this may prove too tempting to resist for the many office workers in the area. Long lunch break requests are sure to rise as everyone goes out to get a glimpse of these yachts for hire.so enjoy exclusive london olympics 2012 with my yacht team and with luxury facilities.

The reason Epping Forest is so important today as an open space and forest so close to London is that in 1878 Acts of Parliament were passed entrusting the care of the Forest to the City of London and appointing the City as the Conservator of the Forest. It still governs how it is managed today.

London is one of the biggest cities of England; it is the busiest place not in England but whole of the world. It is known as the heart of England. Recently they have won the Olympics bid and it is to be held in London from 27th July 2012. London is the only city that will get a chance to hold the Olympics for the 3rd time. They have hosted Olympics before in 1908 and 1948. They won the bid back in 2005 as they defeated Moscow, New York, Paris and other European countries to host these games. They have specially built a stadium in London to host the Olympic Games. They will use a mixture of new and already existing stadiums in the country.
A new stadium known as the ‘Olympic stadium’ is being built in London to host the games to be held in summer. It is the main stadium and will be having a capacity to hold more than 10 million people at a time. The London stadium is to be handed over to them by 2011 and London will have one of the biggest stadiums in the world. Powering The London Olympic Games
Powering The London Olympic Games
The creation and implementation of a successful Olympic games goes far beyond the stadium stands and swimming pool walls, it branches out from the athlete's village and in to the surrounding communities. The success of such an event lies as firmly on its impact on the outer environment as it does on the games themselves.
In order to kick-start and maintain such a glorious event, a myriad of operational implications must be considered at great length, and addressed in meticulous detail. From the construction of civil amenities and public transport solutions, to concerns of power production and sustainability, the list of factors to be taken into account is extensive.
For the London games in 2012, construction has began on a variety of arenas, bridges and other essential facilities. The creation of an efficient infrastructure is one of the most important factors in the success of the 2012 Olympics, and will play a significant role in determining the legacy of these games in the aftermath of the event.
In preparation for the London Olympics, great emphasis has been placed on the importance of an effective, coherent energy and power strategy. Organisers have constructed (or are in the process of constructing) a Pumping Station, Primary Substation, and Energy Centre, all with the purpose of supplying essential utilities for the event.
The Completion of the Primary Substation in October 2009 means that building work from thereon-in would not rely so heavily on the usage of temporary generator rental. However, it is known that such temporary power supplies will be used for 39 venues in 7 locations for the duration of the games, from London to Glasgow.
Temporary power will play a crucial part in a variety of energy requirements as demanded by field-of-play lighting, camera equipment, and the International Broadcasting Centre. The latter is a crucial component for the delivery of the Olympics experience to millions of viewers across the globe.
In total, it is believed that the games will be the greenest event in Olympic history. Through sustainable design methods and the use of environmentally friendly biomass technologies, London 2012 promises not only to help preserve the environment during the event, but also aims to deliver a lasting legacy in the form of on of the largest urban parks created in Europe in the past 150 years.

London 2012 Olympics games
The London 2012 Olympics
The city of London has been looking forward to hosting the 30th Olympic Games since beating out their rival, Paris, to be awarded the event. They were awarded the games on July 6th, 2005 beating out Moscow, New York, Madrid and then finally Paris in the last round. London will become the first to host the Summer Games three times and, while the Games in Beijing are a hard one to follow, London is working hard at putting its own stamp on the event.
The London 2012 Olympics will take place between July 27th and August 12th, 2012. The Games are expected to attract thousands of tourists in a city that is already popular with visitors and crammed with it's own locals. In preparation, London is revamping their transportation system in order to be able to cope with the influx. Improvements to the transportation network were key in winning the bid and the goal of Olympic organizers is to have 100% of spectators arriving by public transport and 80% of athletes a short 20 minute commute from their event.
The London 2012 Olympic venues will be a mix of old and new facilities, including some historic London landmarks. Anxious not to repeat the Millennium Dome mistake, organizers have been sure to include plans for downsizing venues for use in the future and some will be temporary or moved to a new location after the Games.
The London Olympics have not been without controversy, the major issue being financing. A budget of 5.3 billion was announced for the building of infrastructure and venues for the Games and a further 1.7 billion has been earmarked for the regeneration of the Lower Lea Valley where much of the Games is to be held. Various other costs are expected to add a further 2.7 billion to the budget. With the amount of money being spent, there are many vocal anti-Olympics groups.
The logo has also been a source of controversy due to the poor response it has received along with the amount spent on it. The fact that the logo, that popular opinion says sucks, cost 400,000 has angered a lot of people.
Tickets are due to go on sale in the spring of 2011 with an estimated 8 million tickets available for the Olympics and 1.5 million for the Paralympics. The London Olympics will feature 26 sports and 38 disciplines with baseball and softball being dropped from the Games 2 days after London was awarded the bid. Women's boxing will be an event for the first time.
The London 2012 Olympics are being touted as the eco-friendly Games, and a lot is being done to assure that they are environmentally friend and sustainable. The city's waterways are being regenerated and a large amount of parkland is being set aside for visitors to explore.
London is a fantastic city with a lot to offer any visitor, even when the Olympics aren't on. The Summer Olympics is sure to bring with it a fantastic atmosphere and bring London's multicultural residents together while still maintaining a friendly rivalry. London is sure to be a great host for one of the world's premier events.

What to do in London during the 2012 London Olympics?
What to do in London during the 2012 London Olympics?
Author:London2012What to do in London during the 2012 Olympics?
The 2012 Olympics will be hosted in London, England. The Olympics is the largest sporting event in the world and attracts millions of fans worldwide and many more millions will be watching events live on TV.
The Official countdown clock for the upcoming 2012 London Olympics has been unveiled this week. Just 24 hours after its initial launch just countdown clock experienced technical difficulties and stopped working. These problems have been fixed now and the clock is counting down to the event.
London 2012 Olympics tickets
The 2012 London countdown clock marks the 6 weeks when the tickets go on sale. To purchase tickets for the London 2012 Olympics you will need a Visa card.
London winning the Olympic bid will hopefully be big for London and the UK, with a lot of money being spent by tourists when they come to the country and also by advertisers who are sponsoring the event.
Although the main stadiums for the events will be in London there are also events in the south coast of England as well as in Glasgow, Scotland.
Football events
These are just some of the football stadiums that will be used in the 2012 Olympics:
- Old Trafford, Manchester
- Wembley Stadium, London
- Millennium Stadium, Cardiff
- St James' Park, Newcastle
Apart from the main Olympics events there are also many Galleries and Museums which can be visited. A lot of these museums such as the Science Museum in South Kensington or the Natural History Museum (which conveniently is just around the corner) are both free to the public. Famous landmarks such as Big Ben, Buckingham Palace, The Tower of London and the London Eye (which gives you a fantastic view of the Thames and London) are always tourist favourites.
So what else is there to do in London during the 2012 Olympics?
As well as museums and art galleries such as the Tate Modern and the Tate Britain in London there are always a lot of popular Plays showing at the London Theatre. Sightseeing bus tours can also been booked for large groups of people. These tours will take you around central London passing major landmarks.
The events schedule for the 2012 Olympics
The events schedule is now available to download as a PDF document from the official London 2012 Olympics website. This will guide you through the events.
Getting around London
To get around London, you will most likely be travelling by Bus or Tube, for this it\'s definitely worth buying an Oyster travel card. This means travel should be cheaper than a standard ticket. The Oyster card can then be topped up at newsagents and at Tube stations. To use it you simply need to touch in and touch out at the barrier.

2012 London Olympic Aquatics Centre
2012 London Olympic Aquatics Centre £11M Over Budget
Author:White Digital Media
The cost of the Aquatics Centre for the 2012 London Olympics has increased by £11 million due to challenges to the construction of the roof and air temperature guidelines. The project will cost £268 million to complete, up from the original cost estimate of £75 million.
The Aquatics Centre, designed by Zaha Hadid and built by Balfour Beatty, has undergone several redesign changes since the planning stages. Inspired by water in motion, the design features an undulating roof that resembles a wave. The centre is located on the southwestern edge of the park and is accessible via the Stratford City Bridge.
Despite this setback, the Olympic Games will cost less than expected, staying within its £9.3 billion budget due to money savings along the way. Last month, organizers decided to eliminate plans for an £11 million fabric wrap that would cover the Olympic Stadium that would have served the dual purpose of image projection and spectator protection.
Other cuts have been made to ensure that construction will come under budget, an imperative given the state of the economy and the fact that Olympic construction is notorious for far exceeding the budget (I\'m looking at you, 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal).
The Games came under fire this year when the Coalition Government prepared to make devastating budget cuts to all departments. The government managed to leave the Olympic budget untouched.
However, they slashed funding for UK Sport by 28 percent. Liz Nicholl, CEO of UK Sport told the Associated Press last month, 'Ministers have been clear throughout the process that they see the continued support of sports and athletes through to London 2012 as a priority, and this reduction will not have any significant impact on our goals.'
The London Olympics is part of a greater revitalization scheme of East London.
