At the last election, David Cameron promised he would "cut the deficit, not the NHS". Last week’s autumn statement showed the opposite is true. As a result of lower growth and higher unemployment, the government will be forced to borrow £158bn more than forecast a year ago. The New Statesman points out that this is more than Labour was projected to borrow at the last election – an amount that Conservatives then claimed would take Britain to the "brink of bankruptcy".

On December 1st children across the country opened the first window in their advent calendars, starting the countdown to Christmas. But let us mark the countdown in another way - by sending David Cameron a message that all we want for Christmas is our NHS. Cameron’s Health Bill, the Bill that will rip apart our Health Service, is still making its way through the House of Lords. The fight to stop this Bill is far from over: Labour Lords are making a strong stand against it, and it still needs to go back to all our MPs to be debated before it can become law.



But if we want to defeat this Bill, we have to keep up the pressure on the man who is responsible. That’s why we’re going to deliver ‘Health-Scrooge’ Cameron a big Christmas card from all of us, saying: all we want for Christmas is our NHS. Will you sign the card?

Cameron’s Tories, backed up by the Lib Dems, are putting the NHS at risk. Their cuts mean that people are already waiting longer for the treatment they need, and they are wasting billions of pounds on a top-down restructure that will mean:

• worse patient care with services cut, hospitals closing and longer waiting times for treatment

• more privatisation and more companies making money from all parts of our health service

• more red tape making it harder for nurses, doctors and other health professionals to do their jobs

David Cameron promised to ‘protect the NHS’, to ‘give the NHS a real rise in funding’ and to ‘stop top-down NHS reorganisations’. He is breaking every one of those promises – you just can’t trust the Tories with the NHS. Mr 10 Per Cent

The growing clamour by PR Dave for a General Election assumes that people will have a short memory of how basic infrastructure and investment was neglected under Thatcher / Major and the potential of a whole generation was squandered. Here is a letter I received yesterday from Alan Johnson;

Today the Tories finally admitted just how much they want to cut from our public services. I’m writing so that you have all the facts because we need to get this message out there in our communities up and down the country.

I think a lot of people listening to the BBC this morning will have been shocked when they heard David Cameron’s health spokesman Andrew Lansley stating that the Tories would make 10 per cent spending cuts in the vast majority of government departments. It wasn’t a gaffe – even though Mr Lansley seems to have gone to ground at the minute, he hasn’t been sacked for revealing the truth about the Tories’ plans.



I’ve only been Home Secretary for a few days, but I can already see what an impact a 10 per cent cut in that budget would have. Looking at the figures in my department, it would mean front line police officers would be subject to real cuts next year, leaving our streets much less safe. And I’m sure there would be similar risks when those kinds of cuts hit public transport or the skills and science budgets.

Labour’s investment in police officers and community support officers is vital to making our streets safer. Since 1997 there are over 14,000 more police officers and nearly 16,000 community support officers. We now have 3,600 neighbourhood policing teams across the country - one for every community.

We know that there is no appetite in this country for cuts that would undermine the fight against crime. It’s up to everyone in our party – MPs, ministers, activists and trade unionists – to make sure that we get this message out to the country.
It's time to tell David Cameron - Mr 10 Per Cent - that no one wants his Tory cuts.
