LONDON, Aug 2 (Bernama) -- World number two Datuk Lee Chong Wei will face Kashyap Parupali of India in the quarter-finals after beating Simon Santoso of Indonesia in the second round of the badminton Men's Singles competition of the 2012 Olympics.
In the event held at the Wembley Arena here Wednesday, the Malaysian who is also the top seed at the Games easily tamed Simon 21-12, 21-8 in 34 minutes.
Parupali beat neighbour Niluka Karunaratne of Sri Lanka in a three setter, 21-14, 15-21, 21-9, in the elimination round.
Chong Wei, the silver medallist of the 2008 Beijing Olympics, said after being away for two months from competitive badminton due to an ankle injury in May, his second win today gave him more confidence to be back to his normal play.
"I thoroughly enjoyed myself on court as everything worked well and it was also an easier then expected win. I was able to control the match and this gave me greater confidence.
"The three setter in the group match actually worked out well as it gave me the much needed practice to work on certain shots. Now its another hurdle that I have to cross and with the prayers of all Malaysians, I am optimistic of making the last four," he told reporters after his match.
In the Group A match two days ago, Chong Wei beat Ville Lang of Finland 21-8, 14-21, 21-11.
On his quarterfinal battle against Parupalli, Chong Wei said they had met before but the Olympics was a different level of tournament.
"At the Olympic level, no opponent can be treated lightly and I expect him to give it his best shot as he has nothing to lose. There can be no room for complacency," he said.
