Badminton: Sports Minister Remains Optimistic Of Chong Wei's Olympic Gold Medal Chances

TANJUNG MALIM, May 29 (Bernama) -- Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Shabery Cheek remains optimistic that world number one Datuk Lee Chong Wei can still win the country's first ever gold medal at the London Olympics despite his ankle injury.

Ahmad Shabery said since Chong Wei's injury was not serious, it would not hamper his preparations because the world number remained mentally strong.

"Chong Wei's injury is not serious and he will give us the opportunity to win a gold medal in the Olympics.

"Luckily the injury occurred early in the Thomas Cup because injury at the later stage would have taken a longer time to heal instead of the expected four weeks," he told reporters when asked whether the gold medal momentum had shifted to cyclist Azizulhasni Awang.

Ahmad Shabery hoped Chong Wei's injury would heal fast so that he can resume training and preparations for the Olympics.
