Chong Wei Needs Light Training To Maintain Stamina - ISN

KUALA LUMPUR, March 22 (Bernama) -- World number one, Datuk Lee Chong Wei who is undergoing treatment for his injured shoulder, may be required to continue light training to maintain his stamina and strength.

National Sports Institute (ISN) Chief Executive Officer Datuk Dr Ramlan Abd Aziz said without light training like jogging, his stamina may drop by up to 40 percent during the five-week recovery period.

"Chong Wei's rehabilitation is into the second week since suffering a shoulder injury during the All England Championships in Birmingham, England. His full recovery may take five weeks," he told reporters here today.

Dr Ramlan said Chong Wei's Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) report did not show any injury to the structure of the muscles and would not require any specific treatment or surgery.

Chong Wei's coach Tey Seu Bock said the shuttler was involved in light training like jogging and works out in the gymnasium.

"A decision as to whether Chong Wei will be fielded in the second round of the Axiata Cup will be made together by ISN, Chong Wei and the team.

"Though Chong Wei remains inspired to help his team mates in the Axiata Cup round robin matches tomorrow, the ISN has advised against it to avoid aggravating the injury," he said.

Tey said once ISN gives the clearance, Chong Wei would need a series of competitive matches to prepare his for the quest to win Malaysia's first ever gold medal in the 2012 London Olympics.

"A prolonged rest will not do any good for Chong Wei, especially so since the Olympics is round the corner. He needs to be on the alert to monitor changes in pattern of his would be opponents in London," he said.

Among tournaments that await Chong Wei's participation are the Indian Open (April 24-29), Malaysian Open Grand Prix (May 1-6), Thomas Cup (May 20-29), Indonesian Open (June 12-17) and the London Olympics (July 27 - Aug 12).
