SAILING: Khairulnizam is floundering

KHAIRULNIZAM Mohd Affendy's struggles continued in races four and five of the men's laser with the Malaysian failing to improve on his overnight position of 47th at Weymouth and Portland on Tuesday.

The sailor is second from bottom in the 48-man race, 5:59s off the leader. Khairulnizam, 19, had said on Monday that he was struggling to find his sailing patterns and had difficulty coping with the wind as well.

He is running out of time to improve his position as after yesterday's two races, he has only four left to make a meaningful impact at the London Olympics.

Leading after four races is Pavlos Kontides of Cyprus with Britain's Paul Goodison in second. Germany's Simon Groteluschen is third.

Meanwhile, swimmer Khoo Cai Lin, a wild card, will take to the Aquatic Centre swimming pool today for the women's 800m freestyle heats. The best the Malaysian can hope for is a national record in a classy field.
