Red Hot Mexicans Send Malaysian Men's Recurve Team Packing

LONDON, July 28 (Bernama) -- Malaysian archers Cheng Chu Sian, Khairul Anuar Mohamad and Haziq Kamaruddin found the Mexicans too hot to handle in the elimination round of the men's Recurve team event, losing 211-216, at the Lord's Cricket Ground here Saturday.

Right from the start, the Malaysian trio were a bundle of nerves, allowing the Mexican trio to take the advantage by moving into the lead at the half way mark.

The Malaysian trio however, managed to level the score after the third end when both were tied 75-75 but the Mexican's stepped on the pedal and never looked under any serious threat although all three Malaysians ended their final arrows with bulls-eye scores (10).

Team leader Chu Sian admitted that his performance today was not up to the mark, claiming his score was the worst he had managed throughout the year.

"Nothing went our way. We were tense when the fans started cheering aloud. We lost our concentration and failed to find the intended target," he told reporters.

Khairul who was a bundle of nerves at the start but managed to produce a more consistent performance at the later stages said yesterday they were rattled by the presence of the South Koreans and today the loud cheers of the fans affected their concentration.

"Yesterday, we were in action next to the South Koreans in the ranking round and gave them too much respect but today we were a little nerves when the fans started cheering loudly," he said.

Having lost in the team event, the Malaysian trio will now concentrate on the individual event to continue their search for medals at the London Olympics.

Meanwhile, the only Malaysian woman archer competing in the individual recurve event, Nurul Syafikah Hashim, also saw an early exit when she finished in 60th spot from a field of 64 archers.
