LONDON, July 29 (Bernama) -- Malaysia's London Olympics campaign started on a disappointing note when two cyclists failed to complete their 250km race, archers failed to find their target and a shooter could not gun down the points needed to advance further.
Much was expected of shooter Nur Suryani Mohd Taibi in the women's 10m Air Rifle but she finished 34th of 56 shooters in the competition and failed to advance further at the Royal Artillery Barracks, venue for the shooting competition.
Nur Suryani who has a personal best score of 397 could only manage 392 points in the event won by China's Yi Siling.
"My best score so far is 397 but I had only aimed for 390 points here," said Nur Suryani who is competing in the games although she is eight months pregnant.
There was more disappointment on the London roads when cyclists Muhamad Adiq Husainie Othman and Amir Mustafa Rusli failed to complete the 250km road race event, Saturday.
Archers Cheng Chu Sian, Khairul Anuar Mohamad and Haziq Kamaruddin were also shown the way out by a red hot Mexican trio in the Men's Team Recurve elimination round.
The Malaysian trio, touted as medal winners, lost 211-216 to bow out of the competition, which was eventually won by Italy who beat the United States in a thrilling final.
The United States who beat pre-tournament favourite South Korea in the semifinals lost by a single point to Italy.
There was some consolation at the Wembley Arena when world number eight Koo Kien Keat/Tan Boon Heong beat Japanese pair Naoki Kawamae/Shoji Sato in straight sets 21-12, 21-14 in a group match of the men's doubles.
Malaysia's current top women's singles, Tee Jing Yi however, lost to experienced South Korean Bae Yeon-Ju 21-16, 15-21, 12-21 while the mixed doubles pair Chan Peng Soon/Goh Liu Ying lost to Chen Hung Ling/Cheng Wen Hsing from Taiwan 12-21, 21-6, 15-21 in three sets.
Tee, Chan/Goh however were safe with the new badminton format where they are currently playing in the group event.
Sunday, the second official day of the 30th Olympics, Malaysian athletes will see action at the Aquatic Arena where Pandelela Rinong and Cheong Jun Hoong will compete in the Women's synchronized 3m Springboard.
Malaysia's sole fencer in the London Olympics, Yu Peang Kean will need to be at his best form when facing Zeid Mannad from Egypt in the Men's individual Sabre event to lift the gloom.
