Malaysian Archers To Get First Taste Of London Games Friday

LONDON, July 26 (Bernama) -- Unpredictable weather conditions with rain and strong winds at the Lord's Cricket Ground, venue for archery events, will not dampen the spirit of Malaysian archers to enjoy their first taste of the London Olympics, Friday.

As the temperature in Central London hovered between 15 to 20 degree Celsius in the daylight and dropped below 10 degrees at night, Malaysian archers Cheng Chu Sian, Khairul Anuar Mohamad, Haziq Kamaruddin and Nurul Syafikah Hashim remain buoyant of winning medals from the world's biggest sporting event.

Chu Sian, Khairul Anuar and Haziq will compete in two events respectively - men's recurve team and individual - while the only women archer, Nurul Syafikah sees action in the recurve individual.

National coach Lee Jae Hyung when met by Bernama at the training centre here today admitted that his charges were at their best condition.

"We arrived in London on July 19 and quickly acclimatized with the current weather here. It's not an obstacle for us because other countries are also facing the same condition," he said.

Lee said the performance of the four Malaysian archers kept progressing each day and were eagerly waiting for tomorrow's Ranking Round to start.

He said only Chu Sian had competed in the Beijing 2008 Olympics while Khairul Anuar, Haziq and Nurul Syafikah will be making their Olympic debut.

"I'm not worried with the men's team as Chu Sian will guide our junior archers. For Nurul Syafikah, I hope she can gain experience while competing with world class archers," he said.

In tomorrow's Ranking Round competition, he predicts the men's team will face a tough challenge from the South Korean team because on paper the South Koreans are at world number 3 while Malaysia are at number 10.

"The same thing goes to Nurul Syafikah as she will be competing with South Korean and Indian archers who have won gold during the 2010 New Delhi Commonwealth Games," he said.

The ranking round competition is to decide the draw for the main event on Saturday.
