IOC Announces Olympic Highlights of the Week

On 8 February, IOC President Jacques Rogge went to Albertville (France) for the celebrations marking the 20th anniversary of the XVI Olympic Winter Games. He was accompanied by IOC member Jean-Claude Killy, who was co-President of the Games Organising Committee alongside Michel Barnier, the current European Commissioner for internal market and services.

IOC ACTIVITIES
PRESIDENT
On 8 February, IOC President Jacques Rogge went to Albertville (France) for the celebrations marking the 20th anniversary of the XVI Olympic Winter Games. He was accompanied by IOC member Jean-Claude Killy, who was co-President of the Games Organising Committee alongside Michel Barnier, the current European Commissioner for internal market and services.
This week in Vidy, the IOC President has hosted a Peruvian NOC delegation composed of NOC President José Quiñones González, Secretary General Francisco Boza Dibos and the Peruvian Ambassador to Switzerland, Juan Carlos Gamarra. He also met the President of the NOC of the Dominican Republic, Luis Mejia Oviedo, before receiving Joe Tripodi, Executive Vice President and Chief Marketing and Commercial Officer of The Coca-Cola Company.    
MEMBERS
We have just learnt that Barry Maister has been made an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit.
COMMISSIONS
Last week, an IOC delegation visited the venues outside London which will be hosting the football tournament for the 2012 Games. The group, led by the London 2012 Games Coordination Commission Chairman, Denis Oswald, and Olympic Games Executive Director Gilbert Felli, were thus in Coventry, Manchester, Glasgow, Newcastle and Cardiff. The IOC group was accompanied by London Games Organising Committee CEO Paul Deighton and Head of Sports Competition David Luckes.
OTHER NEWS
The IOC has awarded the Japan Consortium the broadcast rights in Japan for the XXII Olympic Winter Games in Sochi in 2014 and the Games of the XXXI Olympiad in Rio de Janeiro in 2016.
INTERNATIONAL SPORTS FEDERATIONS
SUMMER IFS
The captain of the Dutch women’s team, Maartje Paumen, has been voted women’s International Hockey Federation (FIH) Player of the Year by her fellow international hockey players, with Stacey Michelsen claiming the Young Player award, becoming the first-ever New Zealander to win this award The winners received their awards from FIH President Leandro Negre, at the FIH Champions Trophy in Rosario (Argentina).
This week in Paris (France), the International Judo Federation (IJF) signed a memorandum of understanding and partnership protocol with the International Military Sport Council (CISM) and the International Police Sport Union (USIP). These agreements were signed by IJF President Marius L. Vizer, CISM President Hamad Kalkaba Malboum and USIP President Ahmad Nawaf Al-Ahmed Al-Sabah.
In the latest edition of its Newsletter, the International Modern Pentathlon Union (UIPM) announced the 2011 UIPM Photo of the Year winner. Fans from around the world sent in their votes, with 21.6 per cent of the total going to Paul Roberts’s photo of British pentathlete Freyja Prentice in action at the 2011 World Cup Final. Two other photos by Roberts also achieved third and fifth places in the competition.
The International Rugby Board (IRB) recently launched a new interactive web site to provide the best possible information on concussion management.
On 1 February, 177 days before the Games open in London, the International Sailing Federation (ISAF) launched its 2012 Games web site (http://www.sailing.org/olympics/london2012/home). This site will provide all the information, stories, results and multimedia that teams and spectators will need.
WINTER IFS
The International Ski Federation (FIS)’s member federations recently selected three winners of the FIS Journalist Award for the 2011-12 season. In the USA, long-time Olympic broadcaster Tim Ryan was honoured for his decades of service as an Alpine ski race commentator during the World Cup competition in Beaver Creek. In Japan, the two internationally renowned ski journalists Jin Shiga and Hiroyuki Yakushi were honoured for their long-term contributions to promoting skiing during the World Cup, World Championships and Olympic Winter Games.
NATIONAL OLYMPIC COMMITTEES
The German NOC and its President, Thomas Bach, has awarded the IOC 2011 “Sport and Social Responsibility” Trophy to the Mayor of Frankfurt am Main, Petra Roth. At the presentation ceremony, Thomas Bach recalled the support that Petra Roth has given to grassroots and high-level sport alike during her 17-year tenure. “Petra Roth has demonstrated the importance of sport for community development and integration in exemplary fashion”, he said.
The Japanese NOC is organising a series of “festa” events to celebrate Olympic Day. Sponsored by the IOC and Olympic Council of Asia’s “Tsubasa” programme, around 60 events will be held during the next three years to encourage the areas and people affected by the earthquake and tsunami in March 2011. Last week, an event was held in Shizukuishi, in the Iwate prefecture which hosted the Alpine Skiing World Championships in 1993. Children enjoyed fun and games in the snow with two legendary skiers, Norway’s Kjetil Andre Aamodt and Slovenia’s Jure Franco, who were present thanks to the efforts of the FIS.
ORGANISING COMMITTEES FOR THE OLYMPIC GAMES
LONDON 2012
The Organising Committee for the Olympic and Paralympic Games in London (LOCOG) recently provided more details about the lighting of the Olympic flame, on 10 May, and its arrival in the UK on 18 May. The Olympic Torch Relay will cover the whole of the UK during the 70 days between 19 May and 27 July. The flame will be lit from the sun’s rays in the ruins of the Temple of Hera in Olympia (Greece), where the Ancient Games were held. After an eight-day relay in Greece, the flame will arrive at the Panathinaiko Stadium in Athens, where it will officially be handed over to LOCOG.
As part of the volunteer training programme, 10,000 London 2012 Games-maker volunteers and Games-time employees gathered at Wembley Arena in London on 4 and 5 February for the first of seven orientation training weekends. These weekends are the first stage in the training programme for LOCOG staff and up to 70,000 volunteers.
SOCHI 2014
On 7 February, the Sochi Organising Committee for the 2014 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games marked the two-year countdown to the start of the Games by announcing details of its volunteer recruitment programme. Some 25,000 volunteers will work during the Games in Sochi in more than 20 areas, including meeting and greeting the delegations at the airport and helping with the Closing Ceremony. Various events all over the country, in conjunction with the 26 Sochi 2014 volunteer centres, will mark the start of volunteer recruitment.
