QUALITY CONTINGENT: Tunku Imran has faith athletes can win medals in London

OLYMPIC Council of Malaysia (OCM) president Tunku Imran Tuanku Ja'afar believes Malaysia's London Olympic contingent have quality to return with medals.
High jumper Lee Hup Wei and hurdler Noraseela Mohd Khalid, who are wild cards, make up the near-final list of 30 athletes from nine sports with swimmers Kevin Yeap and Siow Yi Ting still hoping to make the trip to London in case of withdrawals from other countries.
"Our contingent is not huge but they have quality. We have more medal prospects compared to four years ago in Beijing," said Tunku Imran at the London Olympics sponsorship presentation at Wisma OCM in Kuala Lumpur yesterday.
"We have divers with great potential while our cyclists and men's archery team have improved a lot.
"Our shuttlers have a chance in men's singles and doubles; and mixed doubles. I also expect other qualifiers to perform well in London."
Malaysia will be represented in diving, badminton, archery, cycling, fencing, sailing, shooting, swimming and athletics.
The main sponsors of the Malaysian contingent are Spark Manshop, Power, Maxis, Coca-Cola, Sports Toto, Dutch Lady, Milo, Spritzer, Telekom, Astro Arena, Mesuma and Carlsberg.
The national archery team, led by Cheng Chu Sian, and swimmer Khoo Cai Lin were among the Olympic-bound athletes at the event.
The best Malaysian performer in London stands to earn RM20,000 from Sports Toto while Carlsberg will award all medallists with life-insurance policies worth between RM50,000 and RM150,000.
Despite the legal tussle for the ownership of the "three tiger stripes" between the National Sports Council (NSC) and Mesuma, the latter will provide the official attire for the Olympic-bound athletes.
