MALAYSIA'S chances of having their first ever women's weightlifter at the Olympics are in jeopardy after the country's sole slot at the London Games appears to have been revoked by the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF).
Malaysian Weightlifting Federation (MWF) president Zafarul Akbar Kassim said Malaysia's place at the Games has been given to Vietnam. However, no reason was given by the IWF for the decision."We noticed on the IWF website recently that our slot at the Games has been given to Vietnam," said Zafarul yesterday.
"I immediately contacted the IWF after finding out but they could not give me the reason. We have requested for an explanation in black and white as to why our place was revoked.
"This is a bizarre situation for us as we have been given both a congratulatory letter on clinching a place at the Games and a letter stating that we had not failed any doping tests at the Asian Championships last April last week."
Malaysia had clinched their sole Olympic qualification spot by virtue of finishing sixth in the women's team event of the Asian Championships in Pyongtaek, South Korea last April.
Zafarul said the MWF will wait for an explanation from the IWF before taking action.
"We will wait for their reply before deciding what action to take as this could just be one big misunderstanding.
"We do not want to jump to any rash conclusion now."
