KUALA LUMPUR, June 5 (Bernama) -- Azizah Fadzil has created history by becoming the first Malaysian woman weightlifter and first athlete from the national back-up squad to qualify for the 2012 London Olympics.
The 21-year-old Penangite, who will be taking part in the Women's 53kg category, qualified on merit after coming in the the top five in the category at the Asian zone qualifying round held in Pyeongtaek, South Korea in April.
Malaysian Weightlifting Association (PABM) president, Zafarul Akhbar Kassim said that although time was short, PABM was organising a suitable training programme to ensure that Azizah was well-prepared for the challenge.
PABM was planning to send Azizah for a training programme in China and was awaiting approval from the National Sports Council for the funding, he told Bernama here today.
"We do not want to set a high target for Azizah as we are worried it would only stress her," he said, adding that it would be a good result if she could be in the top 15.
He added that the association was also looking forward to the Asian Weightlifting Association provide them a wildcard slot for a male weightlifter.
