Top four off limits for Malaysia after another loss

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia’s hopes of finishing among the top four in the women’s Olympic qualifier in Kakamigahara, Japan, is all but over after they lost 2-1 to Chile yesterday.

It was Malaysia’s third defeat in four matches and they have only one point from the 2-2 draw with Belarus.
Malaysia take on Austria tomorrow in a match of no significance as they will be playing the Austrians again in the classification match for fifth place.

Malaysia started well yesterday, taking the lead through Fazilla Slyvester Silin off a penalty corner in the 49th minute.

Key defender Hasliza Mohd Ali Noor had to be replaced 10 minutes before time because of a knee injury.
Her absence weakened the backline and two defensive errors in the last four minutes cost Malaysia the match.
Manuela Urroz equalised in the 66th minute off a penalty corner and Daniela Caram scored the winning goal a minute from time.

National coach Mohd Nasihin Nubli was annoyed with the sloppy defence.

“We were so close to collecting full points against Chile, who are ranked higher than us. Our game plan was working so well but a lapse in concentration late in the match dashed our hopes,” Nasihin said in a telephone interview.

Japan defeated Azerbaijan 4-1 to top the standings with three wins and a draw.
Only the winners of the qualifier will earn a ticket to the London Games.
