Nur Suryani Grateful To Government For Helping Husband To Be By Her Side In London

KUALA LUMPUR, June 7 (Bernama) -- London Olympics-bound pregnant shooter Nur Suryani Mohd Taibi today thanked the government's efforts to enable her husband Marhazli Mhotar to be by her side when competing in London.

Nur Suryani, eight months pregnant with her first child, said she was overwhelmed by the government's initiative to provide air ticket and competition tickets to her husband so that he can be by her side in London.

"My husband was also surprised by the contribution. He said this was our child's good fortune. London is certainly going to be expensive because of the high exchange rate of the pound sterling, especially so since my husband is only a low ranked policeman," she told Bernama when contacted here today.

In a statement yesterday, the Women, Family and Community Development Ministry said efforts were underway to secure flight and entrance tickets so that Marhazli could be with her during the competition.

The ministry said that her determination, resilience and dedication in overcoming challenges during her pregnancy to participate in such a prestigious competition was highly commendable.

"Therefore, the government will give its utmost support and assistance to enable her to compete in the London Olympics," it said.

Nur Suryani, 30, will be in her eighth month of pregnancy by the time she competes in the 10m air rifle on July 28.

She is set to join the ranks of only three other pregnant athletes to have competed in the Games in Olympic history. The three -- Kristie Moore, Magda Julin and Diana Sartor -- all competed in the Winter Olympics.
